George Dixon Academy was named after George Dixon (1820-98) who was a Birmingham councillor, mayor and MP. The school was established in 1906. Former names include George Dixon Higher Grade School, George Dixon Grammar School, George Dixon Community School, George Dixon Grant Maintained School and George Dixon International School. A famous former pupil includes Michael Balcon, who produced the children's televison programme Dixon of Dock Green, named after George Dixon. He is marked by a blue plaque from the Birmingham Civic Society.

George Dixon Academy - history

There is several schools located in Edgbaston on City Road, between Fountain Road and Portland Road.

George Dixon Junior & Infant School also known as George Dixon Primary School, share buildings with George Dixon Academy.

Named after George Dixon (1820-98) he was a Birmingham councillor, mayor and MP.

He held a conference in 1866 which led to the formation of the Birmingham Education Society in 1867.

By 1884, Dixon created the Bridge Street Technical School.

The school was moved in 1888 to occupy the Oozells Street Boarding School building, renamed to George Dixon Higher Grade School.

The school was built at City Road in Edgbaston in 1906, and renamed to George Dixon School.

Until 2012 the school was known as George Dixon International School, then gained academy status in September 2012, and renamed to George Dixon Academy.

Former headteachers include Robert Dowling and Anthony Hamilton. The current headmaster is Tutvinder Mann.

Sir Michael Balcon

From 1907 until 1912, Sir Michael Malcon (1896 - 1977) studied at this school).

He was a film maker and creator of the character PC George Dixon (of Dock Green).

A blue plaque was placed on George Dixon School in 2007 by the Birmingham Civic Society in memory of Sir Michael Balcon.
