Perott's Folly in Ladywood

DID YOU KNOW?...

J. R. R. Tolkien lived in Edgbaston in his later childhood and it is thought that his inspiration for the 'Two Towers' was from being able to see both Perrot's Folly and  the Waterworks Tower in Ladywood nearby. This is still contested and it is also believed that 'Old Joe' at Birmingham University was influential as he lived in Hall Green during his early childhood. Tolkien liked to explore his local area including Sarehole Mill, Moseley Bog and Lickey Hills, maybe also inspiring his tales of ‘Middle-earth’.

The monsters are coming

BB Taylor's new book is called Murphy and The Monsters and is being released on the 21st Feb 2017.  BB's been working on the concept for Murphy and The Monsters for about 18 months now. BB says "Its been such an amazing process to see him come to life and watch his story grow and evolve. I wanted to create a story where monsters didn’t have to just be scary or mean, where they could be vulnerable too and even need help from time to time. I also wanted to show that normal little boys and girls can believe in big things, and that their imagination didn’t need to be defined by what adults told them."

Birmingham Twinned With Chicago

Did you know that Birmingham is officially twinned with Chicago? What this actually means is debateable but being so called 'second city' probably rings some bells. The two cities are considered to be more friendly and laid back that their counterparts London and New York and both have significant histories in their own right.
