In brief

The King's Head was originally a coaching inn on the Birmingham to Halesowen turnpike, dating from around 1790. The inn was rebuilt as now in 1905 by the Holt brewery. By 2022 the pub had become The King's Head Pub & Indian Grill.

The King's Head - history

There had been a public house on this site, the corner Hagley Road and Lordswood Road near Harborne and Bearwood since at least 1790, when it was a coaching inn on the Birmingham to Halesowen turnpike.

The current pub was established around 1898, and the existing building dates to around 1905, when 'Chamberlain' pillar clock was installed outside.

The pub was built by the Holt Brewery.

The clock outside was removed in 1971 for road widening, it was later renovated and installed on the High Street, in Birmingham City Centre, where it remained until 2015, when it returned to Bearwood on a site diagonally opposite the pub.

There used to be subways, dating to the 1960s at King's Head Cross, but these were demolished in 2014, and it is now easier to cross over the road towards Lightwoods Park and the Bearwood Bus Interchange.

The King's Head Clock was restored by Smith of Derby and installed near the Bearwood Bus Interchange around October 2015, it now faces it's original home of 1905-71, but on the Sandwell side of the border (not in Birmingham any more).

Over the years, The King's Head pub has been renovated many times, with menu changes, but in 2020, it was converted into a Pub & Indian Grill, so the venue now has Indian cuisine.

It is now part of the Maharaja's Express The King's Head Indian Dining Experience.
