The last public execution in Birmingham

Ludgate Hill was claimed to be the site of the last public hanging in Birmingham.

Except it wasn't.

There is another plaque at Snow Hill which states that at what was then the junction of Great Charles Street, Snow Hill and Bath Street, Philip Matsell, aged 30, was hanged on the 22nd August 1806 in front of a crowd estimated at 40,000. He had been convicted of the murder of a "peace officer" (a parish constable or watchman).

It was over 60 years later in May 1868 that the last public execution in Britain took place at Ludgate Hill in London.

The confusion was probably over there being a Ludgate Hill in both London and Birmingham!

The plaque is still there on the wall.
