The Malt House, Brindleyplace - A Birmingham Gem!

The Malt House, now a popular canalside pub, is a traditional building that was once an historic maltings and nail warehouse. Located close to Old Turn Junction and The NIA.

Where is The Malt House?

The Malt House is at 75 King Edwards Road, Birmingham, B1 2NX. At Old Turn Junction where the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal joins onto the Birmingham Canal Navigations Mainline.

In brief

A pub at Old Turn Junction of the Birmingham Canal Navigations, The Malt House was built out of the shell of a nail warehouse dating to 1803 called the Kingston Building. During the G8 in 1998, US President Bill Clinton famously drank here.

The Malt House - history

As the name reflects, a brewery once stood near this spot. The pub itself is built into the shell of the Kingston Building, built in 1803 as a nail warehouse.

As you cross the small footbridge, look back and you can see the old warehouse frontage, with its high sashed windows. The remains of the loading bays can also be seen.

During the days when the canals were used as a major form of transport, many warehouses were built facing directly on to the canals with loading bays giving direct access to the barges.

In more recent times, Bill Clinton, former US President famously drank here during the G8 in 1998.

The pub was developed by John Dixon & Associates in 1995. It is near The National Indoor Arena (opened in 1991), now Utilita Arena Birmingham.

What remains of the Kingston Buildings of 1803 behind (in a courtyard plan) is now IET Birmingham: Austin Court on Cambridge Street (but is not part of the pub). That was restored in 1995 by David Robotham.
