The Old Contemptibles - A Birmingham Gem!

The Old Contemptibles on Edmund Street, Birmingham is a quite unique city centre pub that hosts a rich and fascinating history dating back to the 18th Century.

The Old Contemptibles is so named in memory of the local ex-servicemen who made up a local branch of the Old Contemptibles Association founded in 1925. These ex-servicemen used to meet at the public house and the pub was renamed in 1953 in honour of the First World War heroes.

A separate room in the pub was designed during restoration work in 2007 as a tribute to the First World War military campaign, a war in which the Old Contemptibles were involved.

However local records show that the pub was original known as the Adelphi Wine Vaults and was built in the late 18th Century.  Developer William Hale renamed the pub to the Albion Hotel in1880 following work undertaken, a name it retained until 1953 when it became the old Contemptibles.
